Heart Dog Blog bio picture

Welcome to the Heart Dog Blog!

Welcome to the brand new photography blog for Heart Dog Studios. I'm Tamandra, and my right-hand dog is Borias, The heart dog. Borias is such a blessing to me, I named my business after him. He's not only a great partner and friend, he's an awesome model!

A few years ago, I purchased a digital SLR camera to take reference photos for my paintings, and fell head over wheels in love. I photograph dogs, cats, horses, and the occasional two legged creatures. But my primary focus is dogs. Dogs have a very special place in my heart, and I have always felt a special connection with them. I have a huge passion for training and behavior, and am a dog sport enthusiast.

This blog will give a glimpse into my world, what captures my attention and heart. My style is candid natural light photography, that shows the subject's personality and soul. Those of us who share the love of an animal know they are a part of our hearts.

I would love to capture your heart...

Introducing JD

This week, I had the pleasure of a wonderful shoot with JD, a very sweet, very loved mixed breed boy. JD’s mom bought a lot of raffle tickets at a fundraiser for my dog, to help him with an injury, and she won a photo session. We finally got together and I took images of JD at his lovely home just a few blocks from me.

JD thought it was pretty cool, too, since he got a whole bunch of treats. I love his spotty nose, and his sweet eyes. He is one loved dog, and his mom and he share a very close bond. He’s also a pretty spry boy for 12 years old!

He’s so cute with his toy! He would shake his head around with a goofy face. Love it!

Fiesta Del PAWS!

I can’t believe a whole year has passed since the last Fiesta del PAWS party! How time flies. This is a cool event, and a major fundraiser for PAWS San Diego, Pets Are Wonderful Support. They help pet owners who are elderly and have illnesses or disabilities, and are having trouble affording food, medical expenses and other care of their pets. So they help people keep their beloved companions.

As I did last year, I donated an original painting of my logo design, in a cool, contemporary square format on canvas. “Always in My Heart”. It’s an honor to be able to give my work to help out such a great cause!

The party was held at this huge estate next to Balboa Park, and it was stunning. Borias and I got our picture taken with the great Loretta Swit, who was an award honoree for her efforts to help animals. And of course, there were lots of dogs about!

My painting was bid on several times, and won by this great couple, who were the dads to an utterly adorable Golden Retriever named Buddy. Doesn’t he have the sweetest face ever? I love the image of him smiling, with his dad’s legs behind him so much, I’m seriously tempted to make a canvas of it for a display. What do you think?

Here’s some of the other canines having fun in the sun.

And lastly, here’s a couple of major cuties that are up for adoption at the San Diego shelter. Unbelievably, neither found a home that day! Gotta say, I was really tempted with the kitty. He looks a lot like my cat, Bono. I’m sure they’ll find their forever home very soon.

Dog Watching at an Art Festival

I wheeled down with my trusty sidekick to the North Park Festival of the Arts today. What a gorgeous spring day it was. The weatherman said it was going to be quite hot, but we actually ended up with mild weather. Perfect day. There wasn’t a whole lot to look at with the exhibitors-a lot of non-art stuff was there-, but as usual, there was a vast array of canines.

Here’s some of them.

Woofstock

Woofstock is an annual event benefitting Canine Companions for Independence, held in Balboa Park. There’s groovy canines dressed up for the theme, with a costume contest, and disc dogs, a fun zone, and lots and lots of dogs, pets and Service dogs alike. I also noticed there were quite a number of other photographers there, too, being the perfect setting to wander around snapping images of dogs.

There were many familiar faces, and I ran into some old friends, too. The weather was cooperative, just one little slight drizzle, after raining the night before. Made for a nice cool day, which is good for me walking about with my dog, who avoids the sun like the plague. Even on cool days. He’s um, “sensitive” ; )

This is a Belgian Shepherd, six months old, that’s a new pup for a friend of mine who has Malinois. She just loves the bad boys, and this one is going to be one very naughty boy indeed! But he sure has a sweet face…

This is Mark, who had an adorable Boston Terrier, Bandit the Biker Dog. Bandit went everywhere with him, and had his own remote control Harley to ride, complete with leather outfit. The two did appearances for charity all over town. Sadly, Bandit passed away suddenly several months ago, leaving a very big hole in Mark’s heart. I saw him getting some love from this Boston, and quickly got the shot. I must say, I teared up.

Ah, pugs. Are they not the cutest?? I love taking photos of those pudgy puggy faces! I love the little hat on the bottom one, like The Wild Bunch, a Brando pug!

And this Great Dane pup was so darn cute, I all but squealed! Love the way they dressed him up. Adorable!

And last, but not least, got a couple of my boy when I had him get in a bed of flowering iceplant. Cooperative for a couple minutes, then he protested. I’m getting quite a few photos of him barking at me ha ha!

Grape St. Dog Park

This is my very favorite dog park in San Diego. It’s huge, and not fenced in. Well, not really. There is wooden beams surrounding, with a golf course beyond the parameters. It seems to be a much more relaxed atmosphere, not to mention picturesque, with a nice view of the city’s skyline. Plus, it’s in South Park, a very hip happening neighborhood. There’s a lot of regulars, and most people seem to know each other really well.

It was a great day to spend a few hours snapping photos on this first week of Spring. I went to meet a new friend that I “met” on Yelp, with a local conversation I started. She has two adorable dogs, one older, 12, and the other just a pup. All wobbly and gangly at 8 months old, she’s a very pretty Shiloh Shepherd named Amalia.

And speaking of puppies, this Boxer reminded me of when I had a Doberman, and taped his ears. Whew, what a pain that was! They sure look funny, too. I think the dogs probably find it a pain, too, and I do lean towards keeping them natural. (Though a Doberman looks really weird with floppy ears to me!).

This cutie was abandoned in his new family’s yard, with a note in Spanish that they could no longer care for him. He was covered in filth, scared of his own shadow. He was still a bit insecure, but obviously his new humans have taken great care and helped this sweet boy a whole lot. Really cool to hear stories like that. Here he is in the safety between his dad’s shoes.

Had to take a couple shots of my boy, especially seeing that he had a flake of leaf on his nose, and the ‘bratty’ look he was giving me. He doesn’t like to share his ball, and he’s probably thinking “yeah, this is mine, and you can’t have it. Neener!” Ha ha.

This Golden Retriever cracked me up. He’s also a rescue, and he became obsessed with golf balls. That is all he will retrieve! I asked if his owner was worried about him choking, but he took great care to make sure he took it from him quickly, and said the dog never munched on them. Still, yikes! Sure was funny, though. And he’s a real cutie!

And this is Max. One of the most adorable Great Danes I’ve ever met. I love to watch him play, the way he bounds around, and his funny ears. He’s really expressive, especially when I make weird noises at him!

Doggie Fest!

This was a cool, fun event. First annual Doggie Fest, in Point Loma. There was a really great turn out, with vendors, and dog adoption groups with a lot of hopefuls waiting for new forever homes. I do hope many of them found one. So this was a fun one to wander around with camera, snapping all these great faces.

Here’s some favorites.

This little guy has the most adorable puggy face!! Look at those bottom teeth!

There’s a special place in my heart for disabled dogs : )

Dog Show

Silver Bay Kennel Club hosts one of the largest dog shows in Southern CA in February, and I’ve been going for many moons. I showed my first Doberman there, and a few years back, my dog Borias finished his Companion Dog title there. Its an indoors show, with challenging lighting, so this year I ended up shooting some images of dogs outside over at the agility area.

I love relationship shots, and I lucked out with this cute Border Collie and his mom. Then I found the Papillion playing peek-a-boo in the stroller to be irresistible, too. (There were quite a few dogs in strollers just for dogs!)

Dogs have to stay laying down for 5 minutes in this exercise, and let me tell you, it seems more like 5 hours!

Southwest Schutzhund Regionals

This year I was really lucky to have this event in my own backyard, here in San Diego. I used to participate in the sport with my German Shepherd, Borias, until he got injured with herniated disc. Boy, is this a fun sport! It’s a character test for the German Shepherd Dog, where they compete in tracking, obedience, and protection. It was developed in the 1900’s as a test to determine whether the dogs could perform in a manner for which the breed was intended. Today, many other breeds participate, but it’s a very demanding test. The Regionals determine who will go on to the Nationals, so this is the cream of the crop.  Despite the pouring rain the first day, dogs and handlers both showed amazing character and spectacular effort.

Though my day got off to a rocky start, witnessing a Malinois being severely injured by slipping in the mud as he went to leap for a sleeve bite. It looked like a horrible back injury :( Then I heard the news that Borias’ sister was very suddenly found to have cancer, and was bleeding into her stomach. She was put to sleep the night before. So sad to see a great dog pass far too early.

So here’s some highlights of the weekend.

They don’t call them “Malinuts” for nothing! This dog was actually doing the heeling routine, by leaping up and making a high pitched bark constantly. Talk about leaking drive!

This has got to be the world’s longest tongue on a German Shepherd!

These crack me up…the first dog took a leap and planted a smooch right on target, and this other little girlie was being swung around, to her delight!

Some really awesome women competitors in the sport!

This is what it’s all about. The close bond, the relationship between human and dog!

Happy Heart (Dog) Day!

Valentine’s Day, or as I like to call it, Heart Dog Day! After all, my significant other is my dog! I am honored to announce that Heart Dog Studios is the first Studio Spotlight feature on Dog Art Today, posted today to coincide with the holiday and my name. Many thanks to Moira McLaughlin for choosing me, and making such a great post! You can see it here: http://dreamdogsart.typepad.com/art/2009/02/studio-spotlight-tamandra-michaels.html

So in the spirit of Heart Dogs everywhere, here’s a sampling of some images that reflect the amazing relationship we have with dogs.

And of course, I have to end with my own heart dog, Borias.

Jubilation

I attended my first Martin Luther King Jr. parade here in downtown San Diego for the first time on Saturday morning. I’ve wanted to attend before, but now that I live close to all the action, it was much easier for me to swing. I still wish I had gotten there earlier, but alas, I am so not a morning person. And this one was special.

The crowds and parade participants were so energized and jubilant that in a couple days,  Barack Obama would be sworn is as our President. People of all races, young and old were all celebrating the meaningful significance of this coinciding with the remembrance of the great MLK.

I, of course, brought my camera.

I took a few shots of the parade, but my attention was drawn to the spectators. I love capturing expressions. And it was cool taking portraits of all the various Obama t-shirts people were wearing (including myself!) There were so many beautiful children, with their innocent beaming faces. The older generations, so much character in their eyes…

I took some dog images, too, but I’ll save them for a part two post. This post is dedicated to all of us who helped fulfill the Dream, and who celebrated the life of a man who had such a huge impact on the world. And who look forward with hope to another great man, who’s stepped up and showed us that dreams do indeed come true.

This is the professor of Multicultural Studies at San Diego State University. Beautiful woman.

Jubilation!
